The author of By the roadside, Hélène de Kok, has been practising medicine in the Kalahari in north-east Namibia for almost 35 years. She dedicates her book to ‘those by the roadside: for their gentle patience, their humour and courageous acceptance of life in the bleakness, injustice and deprivation that fate has dealt them’. While the characters in the story do not portray individuals, a number of lives are intertwined in every character. However unlikely it may seem to a traveller on a highway in a luxurious car or hidden away in a mansion behind a high, protective wall, these things happen every day, frequently more than once, often many times.
